Hive Building Demonstration

Les and Nathalie will share the thinking behind every measurement and angle, showing you how good design actually helps bees thrive. You’ll understand why these hives work so well and leave with complete plans to build your own.

An Evening of Stories & Solutions

Hear treatment-free beekeeping success stories, natural approaches to common challenges, and practical wisdom from decades of working with bees, from three renowned natural beekeepers. Q&A session included.

This isn't just another
beekeeping event

You’ll be learning directly from the people who developed the methods that thousands of natural beekeepers now use successfully. Les Crowder’s hive design innovations solve real problems that conventional hives create, while Nathalie’s large-scale treatment-free success proves these methods work in practice.

Who is Les Crowder?

Les Crowder is the innovator behind the modern Kenyan Top Bar Hive design used by natural beekeepers around the world.

Les spent three decades as an apiary inspector in New Mexico and Arizona, giving him an unparalleled view of what actually works in beekeeping versus what we’re told should work. This experience led him on a remarkable journey from conventional hive management to pioneering the natural beekeeping methods now used by thousands of beekeepers worldwide.

Starting with a simple observation—that bees naturally build their combs in a curved catenary shape—Les began experimenting with half barrels as hives. When he discovered the bees attached their combs to the walls because the barrels were too wide, he didn’t give up. Instead, he spent years testing different wall angles until he found the half-hexagonal design that works with the bees’ natural geometry rather than against it.

This wasn’t just theoretical innovation. Les proved his methods in the challenging Arizona desert, where extreme temperatures and harsh conditions test any beekeeping approach. His treatment-free colonies not only survived but thrived, demonstrating that healthy bees can resist varroa mites and other challenges when we support their natural behaviors instead of disrupting them.

What makes Les’s contribution so significant is that he solved real problems every natural beekeeper faces.

The Kenyan Top Bar Hive design he developed eliminates the comb attachments that make conventional top bar hives difficult to manage, while the half-hexagonal shape gives bees the space they actually want to use. These aren’t small improvements—they’re fundamental advances that make natural beekeeping practical for ordinary people.

Les documented his innovations in his influential book, sharing not just the plans but the reasoning behind every measurement and angle. His generous approach to knowledge sharing has built a global community of natural beekeepers who understand why their hives work, not just how to use them.

We strongly believe that advocating for organic agriculture is an important part of being a beekeeper in today's world.

Bees are the real teachers. 1000 beekeepers with 100 hives could be critical to the future of beekeeping to replace the aging commercial beekeeping industry. We are the salvation; the solution is the flowers and bees... We need to work with nature's resistance, if we fight it, we will lose.
